OWTS Contractor & Cleaner Licensing

Becoming a Septic Contractor/Installer

Septic Contractors/Installers must be licensed by the Summit County Environmental Health Department. Licensing involves taking an open book test from the OWTS Regulations. Tests may be taken during regular business hours Monday-Friday. A copy of the Regulations may be purchased at our office or downloaded from our website. Please be aware that testing takes, on average, about 3 hours. There is a cost to test and license. Please see our fee schedule for these costs. Licenses must be
renewed each year. If your license expires you must test again to reinstate your license.

Homeowner-Builders

Homeowners may install their own systems if the test is taken and passed. Fees for testing are the same as for contractors, however, homeowners are testing to install their own system only. No license is issued and they are not eligible to install systems other than their own.
