Short Term Rentals Blog

Summit County is implementing regulations for short term rentals (STRs), which are applicable to properties in the unincorporated areas of Summit County. The STR regulations address:
  • - Permitting and fees
  • - Regulation of key neighborhood impacts (e.g., parking and trash) 
  • - Regulation of life safety issues (e.g., smoke and carbon monoxide detectors)
  • - An effective compliance-monitoring and enforcement system.

County has adopted STR regulations, with roll out of permitting system to begin late February:

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) adopted new regulations for short-term vacation rentals in unincorporated Summit County on December 18.  We greatly appreciate the extensive involvement and valuable input we received from the community, which helped the County to craft regulations that will effectively address community concerns, while providing a fair and streamlined permitting process for STR owners and managers in our community.  The adopted regulations can be viewed on the County website at: www.SummitCountyCO.gov/STR. 

The anticipated timeline for rolling out the County’s online STR permitting system is as follows:

  • Late February 2019 – The STR permitting system will go live and the County will begin accepting and processing STR permit applications. 
  • June 1, 2019 – This is the required deadline for a STR permit application to be submitted to the County for any STR unit operating in the unincorporated areas of Summit County. 
  • June 30, 2019 – As of this date, if a STR is found to be operating without the required County STR permit, it shall be considered a violation of the County Land Use and Development Code. This will allow all STR unit owners to get through the 2018-2019 ski season before enforcement of the new County STR regulations begins.
