Current Situation: The Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team (IMT), with Todd Pechota as Incident Commander, assumed command of the Peak 2 Fire this morning at 6 a.m. The team is working with federal, state, and local cooperators to continue suppression activities and manage risk to firefighters and the public.

Today, firefighters will continue to construct containment line along the northwest and southeast flanks of the fire. Crews are working to contain spot fires produced on Wednesday. Direct line construction has been slowed due to the prominence of standing beetle kill timber and the ruggedness of the terrain. The fire did not grow much yesterday due to the cooler, cloudier weather. Firefighters expect that weather to continue today.

Two groups of engines, one stationed in Breckenridge and another in Frisco, will be working on structure protection. The Breckenridge group will be working in and around the Peak 7 subdivision and surrounding areas; the Frisco group will be working in the Gold Hill area and the south side of Frisco.

Public Safety: Firefighters will be operating in neighborhoods that are not evacuated, so please use caution when driving in these areas. The public is asked to not stop along Colorado State Route 9 as it is creating a safety issue for motorists.

Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect for the entire White River National Forest as well as Bureau of Land Management-administered lands and unincorporated private lands in Eagle, Garfield, Mesa, Rio Blanco and Summit counties. For more information on these restrictions, please visit

Evacuations and Closures: As of Thursday July 6, 2017, the following areas have been evacuated: The Peak 7 Neighborhood, which includes approximately 463 residences, was evacuated at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Farmer’s Korner, Gold Hill and Silver Shekel neighborhoods are on pre-evacuation notice. The Town of Breckenridge is on pre-evacuation notice. As of Thursday morning, the fire was approximately 2 miles northeast of the Peak 7 neighborhood.

Peaks Trail, Gold Hill, Wheeler, Miners Creek trails are closed. Parts of the Colorado Trail are closed where overlap occurs with trail closures in the area. Miners Creek Road is closed.
