CABIN DESTROYED BY AVALANCHE IN PERU CREEK
SUMMIT COUNTY, CO – The Summit County Sheriff’s Office received a report from back country skiers at approximately 3:23 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, that the Maid of Orleans cabin located approximately one mile up Peru Creek was in ruins after being hit by an avalanche. Summit County Search and Rescue and Sheriff’s Office personnel investigated the scene utilizing beacon checks and avalanche dogs.
Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Technicians have been in contact with the cabin owner who verified that no guests were using the seasonal home site. The investigation revealed that the home was completely destroyed. The U.S. Forest Service and the Colorado Avalanche Center were notified. Travelers in the area this winter may encounter debris from the home on the Peru Creek Trail and should use caution. Further assessment of the debris from the home will be made in the summer.
