SUMMIT COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER EMERGENCY DRILL

SUMMIT COUNTY, CO – On Thursday, November 1, 2018, The Summit County Justice Center will be closed all-day for a combination of training and emergency drills. The planning for this exercise has been underway for several months in order to clear court calendars and coordinate the participating agencies. The Summit County Combined Courts and Administrative, Civil, and Records Offices of the Sheriff will be closed through the day. Access to the Summit County Jail will be available but possibly delayed. The Summit County Justice Center is located at, 501 N. Park Avenue, Breckenridge, CO 80424.

The Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the Summit County Combined Courts will be participating in training for fire and medical emergencies, threat and violence emergencies, and general building safety, security, and disaster recovery procedures. Red, White and Blue Fire Protection District and the State of Colorado Court Security Division will provide the instruction throughout the day. At times during the day there may be Police, Fire and EMS personnel and vehicles around the outside of the building and justice center grounds.

Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons stated, “The Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the Chief Judge provides the safety and security functions for the justice center and would provide the immediate first response to any emergency situation. I am a strong advocate of training and emergency drills that provide a controlled environment where learning, sharing and actions are practiced. On a daily basis my Court Security Deputies greet and screen all visitors to the justice center and the training and drills will enhance our preparedness and readiness.”

“I am excited to see our Court Staff and Judges, the Sheriff’s Office, Red, White and Blue Fire and the Breckenridge Police Department assembled and reviewing our emergency procedures.” Shared Chief Judge Mark Thompson, “It has been several years since we conducted a Justice Center drill and training involving these topics. Like the Sheriff, I take the safety, security and protection of our staff and the public very seriously, and exercises like this are important to being well prepared and ensuring the Justice Center is safe for everyone.”

We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause. If you need administrative services normally provided from the Sheriff’s Office at the Justice Center, please call the Sheriff’s Office main phone number at 970-453-2232.
