Starting Monday, September 21, a Recreational Pathway (Recpath) detour will be in place weekdays, excluding holidays, along a section of the Dillon Reservoir Recpath where it parallels Dillon Dam Road to allow for Recpath shoulder maintenance work to occur (approximately Dillon Reservoir Recpath MM 2.0 - 4.0). Recpath users will be detoured onto Dillon Dam Road where cyclists can share the road with motor vehicles and pedestrians can use the widened roadway shoulders. Work will be occurring in segments, with the detour moving as necessary in order to limit impacts to recreational users. The construction contractor, RPM Construction based out of Gypsum, CO, will also use a portion of the Dam Road pull off near the Giberson Bay Day Use Area for materials and equipment staging.
“This Recpath shoulder improvements project has been on the maintenance work plan for quite some time and should greatly improve user experience and safety,” said Open Space and Trails Department Senior Resource Specialist Jason Lederer. “One of the biggest challenges was scheduling the work to occur when it is least impactful to Recpath users, but the weather is still favorable enough to allow for construction.”
The construction duration is anticipated to be approximately four weeks. Cyclists, runners, walkers, and other recreational users are reminded to observe all closures and detours while in place. Users detouring off the Recpath onto Dillon Dam Road should observe all roadway laws. Pedestrians should utilize the widened roadway shoulder. Cyclists should dismount and walk, or ride in the direction of vehicle traffic.
The adjacent Forest Service facilities, Giberson Day Use Area and Heaton Bay Campground, will remain open throughout construction until their regularly scheduled seasonal closure date, which is currently anticipated to be October 4. Access will remain open along all Forest Service roads until gates are closed for the season.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and respect of all detours and closures while this important work is ongoing,” said Lederer. “Though unlikely, should users encounter machinery on the Recpath, use caution and ensure good visibility to all operators.”
This maintenance project is funded through a grant from the Dillon Reservoir Recreation Committee and Conservation Trust Fund.
