Summit County Residents Test Positive for Covid-19 Variants

SC Public Health 3c

Community urged to take extra precautions to protect against these strains

Contact: Nicole Valentine, Director of Communications

SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit County Public Health officials confirmed Thursday that the more contagious variant strains of the COVID-19 virus are now present in the county. Two Summit County residents tested positive for the variants this week. One individual tested positive for the UK variant, and another individual tested positive for the West Coast variant. Summit County Public Health received the positive test results on Feb. 4.

The two individuals were tested at the Mako Medical Community Testing Site in Silverthorne, which has begun screening for additional strains of the virus. Summit County is hopeful that additional testing sites will have the ability to start screening for Covid-19 variants soon.

Viruses commonly mutate over time, and these mutations concern Public Health when they lead to an increase in disease transmission or severity. The UK variant is one of concern as it appears to spread more easily and quickly than more common strains of the virus that cause Covid-19. In addition, preliminary data from the UK shows that it may cause more serious illness and possibly be more deadly. Scientists believe that the existing vaccines will be effective in protecting individuals against new strains of Covid-19.

CDPHE and Summit County Public Health are monitoring the situation closely. The confirmation of more contagious Covid-19 variants serves as a warning that the virus is circulating in our community and that individuals should continue to use cautionary measures to protect themselves against the transmission of Covid-19.

“This is an important reminder that everyone, including those who receive both doses of vaccine should continue to follow Public Health recommendations for wearing face coverings, washing hands and physical distancing to help slow the spread of the virus, including these new, more contagious variants,” said Public Health Director Amy Wineland.

Individuals that have cold or flu like symptoms should stay home and seek testing for COVID-19. Testing is widely available and free of cost in Summit County. Information on testing locations can be found at the Summit County Government Testing webpage.

“With the Super Bowl, fresh snow, and optimal ski conditions, we know many will be tempted to gather indoors this weekend,” said Commissioner Tamara Pogue. “The growing presence of this dangerous strain makes it extremely important for everyone to avoid situations that could lead to transmission of the virus. We encourage our community to enjoy the great outdoors, take advantage of outdoor seating at our restaurants, utilize technology to connect, and keep gatherings to no more than two households. There are plenty of safe ways we can connect with one another, we just need to be creative.”
