County Public Health (SCPH) is planning for the administration of the new "bivalent" vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, designed to build protection from both the original COVID-19 virus and recent the omicron variant.

SUMMIT COUNTY – On August 3, the federal government authorized  new COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, known as “bivalent” shots, designed to offer protection from the original COVID-19 virus and the subsequent omicron variant. Summit County Public Health (SCPH) is planning for the administration of the vaccine across the county.

“These boosters are much like an annual flu shot—they’re updated based on the season’s dominant strain,” said Summit County Public Health Director Amy Wineland. “The data for these new boosters shows increased protection against BA.4 and BA.5 variants, the most prevalent COVID variants circulating both locally and nationally. This tailored immunity should help better protect the public and prevent severe illness this upcoming winter season.”

  • The vaccine will be administered as a single booster to those who previously completed a primary series of COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Booster shots are authorized for people ages 12 years and older (Pfizer-BioNTech) and for people ages 18 years and older (Moderna).
  • Booster shots are not yet available for children ages 5 through 11, although updated guidance is expected in the coming weeks.
  • A follow-up booster must be given at least 2 months after an individual receives their initial series or last booster dose.

Community clinics will be held by a traveling vaccine team starting September 13th at the Medical Office Building in Frisco, on the second floor in the Ten Mile meeting room. Clinics will be held on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Due to anticipation of high demand for this vaccineand limited supply, appointments are highly encouraged.
